The project was not just about creating a new building; it involved working with an existing structure and extending it to meet the needs of the Carabinieri barracks. The original building, sold to the city in 1967, lacked architectural significance and needed a transformation to better serve its purpose.
Maurizio Bradaschia and his team approached the project with a vision to create a harmonious blend of old and new. The expansion was designed as a separate wing, aligned with the existing buildings, and constructed with reinforced concrete. The facade of the new wing features a unique texture created by vertical courses of different widths, giving it a contemporary and dynamic look.
The new wing of the Carabinieri Headquarter Saluzzo accommodates the residential area of the barracks. On the first floor, there are five bedrooms with two beds each, complete with ensuite bathrooms. Additionally, a common laundry area was created for the convenience of the residents. The floor below houses a small dressing room, a dining hall with a kitchen, and a multipurpose space that can be used as a meeting room if needed.
The design of the building is characterized by its copper-coated sheet metal exterior, which gives it a distinctive appearance. The green hue of the coating blends with the surroundings, creating a sense of camouflage and solidity. The strategic placement of the windows and doors, with their misaligned positions, adds a touch of contemporary geometry to the overall design.
One of the strengths of the Carabinieri Headquarter Saluzzo is its integration into the historical context of Saluzzo. Despite its modern features, the building respects the alignment and scale of the existing structures, ensuring a seamless transition between old and new. This approach allows the new wing to become a contemporary addition to the historical fabric of the city.
The Carabinieri Headquarter Saluzzo expansion project, designed by Maurizio Bradaschia and his team, received recognition for its innovative design. In 2018, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious award acknowledges the project's outstanding creativity, technical skills, and contribution to improving the quality of life in the community.
The Carabinieri Headquarter Saluzzo stands as a testament to the successful integration of modern design into a historical context. Maurizio Bradaschia and his team have created a building that not only meets the functional requirements of the Carabinieri barracks but also adds a contemporary touch to the architectural landscape of Saluzzo.
